Melanie Symonds

Melanie Symonds was born in England and raised in Southern California and is currently a member of the American Society of Botanical Artists and The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. She holds a Diploma of Higher Education from the Wimbledon School of Art, London, England, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California.

Melanie's interest in the local flora and fauna around her started in childhood as she explored the muddy reaches of the Upper Newport Bay near her home, but she didn't start drawing California native plants until 1998, after working fifteen years in the field of costume design. Colored pencil is the primary medium for most of Melanie's botanical work, which she finds intensely satisfying for rendering the fine detail and complex color needed for botanical subjects. Her pieces have included many native as well as non-native flowers, trees, shrubs, cacti, succulents and seedpods as Melanie continues to explore the wealth of plant material to be found locally in southern California.
