Magnolia 'Butterflies', The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens

Quarterly BAGSC Meeting: Magnolias, Fruits and Vegetables at The Huntington
Members Only, Sept 6, 2025

At last! Our BAGSC Quarterly meeting on Saturday, September 6 will be in-person at The Huntington and will focus on our Huntington Garden’s magnolia and vegetable garden projects. Specimens will be available for you to draw and photograph and Huntington personnel will be joining us to talk about the plants.

This will be an all day event you won't want to miss. Unfortunately, due to room restrictions, we are limited to 30 members, so BAGSC members are encouraged to RSVP early. All BAGSC members are eligible to participate in these projects, and ongoing information will be emailed to members.

There will be no admission charge that day for registered members. Members should park and walk directly to the Brody Lab in the Botanical Building. Our meeting will begin at 9:30 am with a short coffee and tea greeting, followed by a brief business meeting. Huntington personnel will then present information about the garden’s magnificent magnolia collection and the farm’s vegetable garden.

Lunch
Panera Bread will be providing our lunch of assorted sandwiches and salad (Food allergies? Best to BYO). There is no charge for members’ lunch. Following lunch there will be time to sketch plants in the lab and/or take a walk through the gardens to photograph specimens. Come prepared with your favorite art supplies, hat, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.

Gardens Art Guild sign up
Danielle Rudeen will be present at the meeting to help members who are interested in painting on the grounds of the Huntington to sign up for a Gardens Art Guild (GAG) pass if you haven't already done so. The GAG pass allows BAGSC members to paint on the grounds. The GAG application was emailed to all BAGSC members. We will have sign-up applications available at the meeting, and will review guidelines and regulations for GAG artists, and answer any questions.

If you plan to stay the day and draw/paint, please remember that The Huntington requires a GAG pass for any painting or drawing outside (you can draw inside the Brody no problem). If you do not have a GAG pass by the day of the meeting, you won't be allowed to draw or paint on the grounds, but we'll get you set up and you will have a GAG pass available for future visits. You are always free to photograph any of the plants in the garden. Please note that Huntington Security confiscates painting materials if artists don’t have their GAG card with them. Artists can reclaim their supplies as they leave, but are not allowed to paint.

Coming a long way?

Interested in staying overnight? Unfortunately, as of this writing there is no availability at our usual Pasadena spot, the Saga Motel, but there is availability at the Ramada Windham, the Roadway Inn and Courtyard by Marriot. We are not endorsing these and prices vary widely, so do your research!

And, as always, carpooling is encouraged!

We are so excited to finally be together in person. We encourage you to bring whatever you are working on or your sketchbook to share with us. This will be a great day to reconnect with fellow botanical artists and start the fall with new inspiration. We can’t wait to SEE you!
