Have you ever thought about doing an art residency? Every year Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants (TPF) has an open call for artists interested in exploring the wonderful world of California native plants. The artist chosen will work closely with TPF and create unique artwork based on the annual TPF Garden tour, culminating in a solo exhibion at the Theodore Payne Gallery.

The staff at Theodore Payne are extremely knowlegable about California native plants. You will be able to explore the TPF nursery and gardens, speak with staff, sketch and develop artwork that reflects the theme. The goal behind the exhibition is to reach out to the public and through art educate people about the importance of native plants. I was lucky enough to be chosen for this experience in 2020. The theme for my show was California Wildflowers and Pollinators.
A few photos from my exhibition at Theodore Payne:
Theodore Payne selects a variety of artists who work in all kinds of mediums, styles, and genres. Some years the exhibition features traditional art, as mine did, other years it has been very contemporary graphic artwork. The 2024 theme was Islands Above, Roots Below. The artist is Alejandra Fernandez. Her exhibition features paintings, drawings and papier-mache sculptures.
Take a chance and submit artwork. You just might be the next artist chosen to have an exhibition of your work at the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers & Native Plants!
